TLK - Zazu
"Movement", Great Hornbill, Pridelands Majordomo
“That's Mr. Banana Beak to you, fuzzy.“
Zazu is one of those characters it's hard for me to get attached to because he exists solely to fulfill a necessary but bland role and isn't given much, if any, development outside of that. This is not a bad thing by any means - frankly I wish more character-driven fiction wasn't so quick to add needlessly developed characters who we'll never so much as learn the favorite color of because it can easily sap the attention that needs to be given to main players - its just something I'm glad this film knew to limit to secondary and tertiary characters. That said, Zazu belongs to a hit-or-miss character archetype of Prim, Proper Whiner Bitchboy that at best is very funny and at worst starts an endless loop of eyerolling. Oh well, at least he's mostly absent in the sequel.
Zazu's appearance is unrecognizable in the remake. inb4 "but its more realistic, that's what hornbills look like!!!!" there's several distinct species of hornbill to choose from, they just chose one that doesn't look like Zazu at all. Like several other characters in the source film, Zazu's design was never based around just one species of bird. His final design was moreso an amalgamate of different traits from different related species, hence why there's no hornbill irl who looks exactly like him. Realism should influence design, not dictate it (just my onion) especially wrt cartoon characters, so I said Fuck It and did the same thing. He's mostly a mix of Great Hornbill - sans the horn on the bill because it cluttered his beak too much - Rhino Hornbill, and Southern Yellow Billed Hornbill. He was beyond fun to make and made me realize I need to draw more goddamn birds.
